Window panes made out of oyster shells.
Oyster shells
were easily found along the coast. The Goan carpenters made very good use of them;
they would select the best ones and would carefully shape them in such a way
that it would fit perfectly into the window frame. After which they would make
use of superior quality of timber to make a frame for it to stand out. This gave
a translucent warm look to the Goan houses and also provided subdued filtered light
to come into the rooms of house while affording privacy. But today there are
only few houses having window panes made out of shells and this art is on verge
of extinction. This unique art brings out the true beauty of a typical Goan
house.
