Reis Magos - Hidden facts

Google image
I used to visit this place frequently, during my free time in college and enjoyed spending time there. This small village of Reis Magos had a different atmosphere and flavor of its own.

One could just sit there for hours and hours and enjoy watching the waves hit the shore. While the historical monuments (fort) there gave you a task to think about, “who was the master mind architect who thought of building such wonderful monuments, which could stand firm till today?”

The two beautiful historical monuments at Reis Magos, the church and the fort are quiet visible to us from the Panjim side of the Mandovi River.

This church was built during the Portuguese time, somewhere around 1555.  I did not know much about this place so I thought of finding out something more about it and the facts that came across were really amazing and surprising.

It’s said that this church was built on the ruins of an old Hindu temple, and the evidence to this is the small Hindu temple built in Vijayanagar style that you would see over there.

And the second evidence that proves that statement true is the Bas- relief lion statues on the sides of the stairs that you would notice while climbing the church.

I knew this place for quite a long time actually, but I really had no idea about the rich history and heritage it holdsThis is not it, there is another striking fact about this church and that is the tombs of the two viceroys of Goa who were buried there, are still present till today.

Oops! I forgot to mention to you’ll another important fact of the origin of the name “Reis Magos” it means the “Three Wise Man” from the Bible. And this church is known to be one of the famous places in Goa where the feast of three kings is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

So if you’ll decide to visit Reis Magos, I assure you’ll it will be a really rememberable journey.
